Meet the Team Shaping Tomorrow’s Welding Workforce: Bonnie Mitchell

Bonnie Mitchell of VersAbility TECH

Welding

At VersAbility TECH, learning how to master a trade is just one part of the equation for welding students. They also gain the confidence, professionalism, and support needed to build lasting careers. Behind that experience is a team that goes beyond traditional instruction, including professionals like Bonnie Mitchell, who play a critical role in helping students succeed both inside and outside the welding booth.

While Mitchell is not technically a welding instructor, she’s often right there beside them, helping them with their equipment and offering words of encouragement. And her impact on them is undeniable.

As an employment specialist, Mitchell works alongside instructors to ensure students feel comfortable, confident and prepared from day one.

“I support students that come in, help get them started, help them get comfortable,” Mitchell said. “Once they get into the actual welding, I go behind the instructor, ask questions and help reinforce concepts with them.”

Her role evolves as students progress through the program. In addition to reinforcing technical learning, she helps students prepare for life after training—offering guidance on resume writing, mock interviews, and essential workplace skills like communication and time management.

Many students enter the welding program unsure of themselves. Mitchell meets them where they are, taking time to understand their goals and tailor her support accordingly.

“I try to work with them individually,” she said. “I ask them what brought them here, what their interests are, and then I individualize support for each person.”

That personal approach helps students push past early nerves. Within the first few classes, she often sees a transformation as students begin to relax, engage, and believe in their abilities.

Beyond technical skills, Mitchell emphasizes the importance of professionalism and problem-solving—qualities that are critical in the workplace.

“When they get in the welding booth, things happen,” she explained. “There’s frustration. I remind them it’s not going to happen overnight. Sometimes they just need to step out, take a break, and come back.”

She also reinforces expectations around communication and accountability, helping students understand what employers expect from day one.

Students in the program earn foundational certifications in stick welding, preparing them for opportunities with major regional employers like Newport News Shipbuilding, where they can continue building on the skills they develop at VersAbility TECH.

For Mitchell, the most meaningful part of her work is watching students grow—not just as welders, but as individuals.

One student, Joseph Harris, stands out.

When he first entered the program, Harris struggled with confidence and frustration. Like many beginners, he found the learning curve challenging. But through persistence—and support—he stayed the course, even overcoming personal hardships along the way.

Today, he is working successfully at the Newport News Shipbuilding shipyard.

“He smiles when he talks about the class,” Mitchell said.

Stories like this are what fuel her passion.

“It’s the students’ success,” she said. “The relationships that are built. Even after finishing the class, they still reach out for advice.”

Mitchell encourages anyone considering welding to take that first step.

“If you have even the slightest feeling you might want to do it, give it a shot,” she said. “Don’t ever think you can’t do it. Everyone can do it. And you just won’t know until you try.”

That inclusive mindset is at the heart of VersAbility TECH’s mission: creating pathways to meaningful careers for individuals of all backgrounds and abilities.

Through a combination of hands-on training and personalized support services, VersAbility TECH is helping meet the growing demand for skilled trades professionals across the region.

“Not only does VersAbility provide the program, it’s also the support,” Mitchell said. “They help students write resumes, make job connections, and prepare for what comes next.”

In an industry where attention to detail is essential—and opportunity is abundant—students leave the program ready to succeed.

And according to Mitchell, one word sums those students up best:

“Amazing.”
